Project Quilting #1 - Confetti -- Finished!

Well, that took longer than expected!  But I enjoyed the process nonetheless.  Quilting without a provided pattern is just not me ... until now?  Exploring new horizons this year, evidently.

Quilty folks, I offer you:  Child's Birthday Table Mat

The gracious hostess at the Persimon Dreams blog is asking quilters to expand their creativity this year with seven challenges.  She chooses a theme, and then there's about a week for our artsy thoughts to develop into our interpretation and a finished product.  The first theme of the year is "Confetti."

In keeping with my goal of using the stash, all the components of this project were already in-house.  When blog owner Kim Lapacek announced the theme, I immediately remembered the yard of yellow fabric that had been languishing in my stash for well over five years.  The solids were at hand too.

The black border and binding fabric were 2015 purchases intended to coordinate other yardage into stash-busting projects.  The same is true for the backing.  I didn't realize this would all work together until Kim Lapacek provided an opportunity!

The eight paper-pieced blocks are from one of Carol Doak's books and arranged into two groups here.  The quilting was done with Superior Threads tri-lobal polyester, and I will never, ever buy it again; so hard to work with compared to cotton.  The sheen is nice, but not worth the hassle.

This mat could be used for a child's placemat to celebrate their special day.  It would serve well on a decorated table as a place to set the cake (it's pre-washed and still washable).
